A bit early to
review a Christmas DVD, eh Donkey?
"Shrek the Halls" is now on DVD.
That cranky green ogre and his friends jumped from the
big screen to TV last year for a Christmas special. As
much as I can be an ogre myself when it comes to Shrek
and celebrating the holidays much too soon, this special
isn't too bad.
Shrek is bombarded by the holiday spirit when his
friends start celebrating the season with festive
parades and parties. Unfortunately for Shrek, he doesn't
know how to celebrate Christmas.
The program is short and sweet. The animation is up to
feature film standards and looks very good. If you
already love the Shrek series, you'll probably love
this.
I've had mixed feelings about the whole Shrek mythology.
His character starts to wear thin on me with his grumpy
attitude, and I've never been crazy about the use of pop
songs to augment the Shrek stories. The structure of
"Shrek" repeats itself over and over again and you can
pretty much figure out how the movie will end.
As a short, "Shrek the Halls" is enjoyable enough to
recommend. It's got the traditional heavy Christmas
message and plenty of gags to keep kids and their
parents entertained. Lest you say this critic is as
cranky as Shrek, you may be right. But like an ogre,
I've got a soft spot in my heart for the
holidays....just not so early.
