THE STUDIO GATE
How come movies like this continue to be made?
"The Univited" is now available on Blu-ray.
More trying to be spooky when it isn't, "The Univited" is a movie meant for
gullible teens. This is one of those low budget movies that has teenage
girls screaming, "OMG!" They fall for the inept plot of bodies-in-trashbags
premise and spooky ghosts walking on all fours. Haven't we seen this already
in "The Ring?"
"The Univited" does give you a few jolts, but there not from the story.
They're on the soundtrack when the sound mixers decided to crank up
shock effects to past 11. They'll probably make you jump out of your
chair. The filmmakers probably thought they made a scary movie, but they
didn't. Sound effects and the sight of teenage moppets doesn't make for a memorable movie.
The movie features actors who are unknown to me.
The Blu-ray picture quality is excellent. The cinematography is well done
and the 1.85:1 frame is composed with percision. Images are mostly sharp,
but since the movie takes place in dark places, there isn't going to be an
emphasis on sharpness anyway.
The Dolby TrueHD soundtrack gives some real genuine "Jack-in-the-Box" audio
jolts. The audio is very clean and should please most home theater
enthusiasts. No real complaints on this aspect of the movie.
This isn't one of those films I could get into, therefore it's difficult to
find much about it that's worth recommending.
